Best Ecommerce CMS

hey welcome back rancors working from home again I went to the football on the weekend and my voice is a little bit scratchy so I apologize for that it’s great guideline what I wanted to talk to you a little bit about today is a question I get asked quite a lot what’s the best e-commerce system for SEO that’s a difficult question to answer depending on what is important to you from an SEO perspective but I thought I’d take you through some of the things that we look at this is going to be a much bigger blog post than and we’ll get to that a little bit down the track but I just wanted to give you an overview of the sorts of things that we look at or like to see in an e-commerce system for SEO purposes so essentially the Croke this is the criteria that we would look at the ability to easily edit headings page titles URLs and file names so some ecommerce systems won’t let you easily just you know change a URL it can be quite difficult and you might have to do it programmatically you know whereas CMS’s like Magento or WordPress with WooCommerce allow you to do it very very easily and the same applies with file aids like some CMS’s will take in or generate product thumbnails or images and I’ll just give them a an unhelpful filename so it doesn’t describe what the what the image actually is who really wants a CMS or plugin for that CMS that will allows you to do those sorts of things so when I talk about you know customizing URLs page titles headings and file names that’s what we mean I mean we’ve we have worked with CMS’s in the past which haven’t even allowed us to to change heading tag structures and of course with a lot of these ecommerce CMS’s it depends what theme you apply as well but some of them are so locked down that you can’t actually change some of these things the ability to easily create redirects so for instance we’ve worked with ones in the past I think business catalyst was one in the past where we couldn’t easily upload bulk redirects when it was necessary and essentially with all of these things for a good ecommerce platform that’s great for SEO you want something that’s flexible and it was not flexible you’re going to be able to do less with it and that’s why you know a lot of your open source types of platforms will be better for that because they are flexible by nature and the ones at the other end of that extreme which are terrible is anything drag-and-drop don’t do anything drag-and-drop even if it’s not an e-commerce site it was just a normal web site don’t build a web site with a drag and drop tool unless you don’t want it to rank and carry they don’t definitely want to rank you want the CMS to easily allow you to add no follows Canonical’s no Index tags and those sorts of things the final one which is a biggie is speed so when you’re selecting an e-commerce platform try to find some that are already on that platform and I asked for references and then go and run some speed chicks either using that you know the Google PageSpeed tool just google that or the you can go to that as well use that but some of the hosted systems and I’m with hosted systems I’m talking about you’d have to worry about going finding a host and you don’t actually have the software someone else was running that software for you so ones that would fall into that category would be ones like shopify bigcommerce neato they’re all hosted systems non-ecommerce sites would be hosted the systems would be Squarespace sites they’re all hosted on them on their own system so you don’t have a lot of control therefore on those systems which if the site is running quickly that’s probably okay so for instance I shall these ones so here we’ve got this this is crawl stats from a site that is running on big commerce ok so you can see here the average page load times 390 seconds that’s pretty good ok then we’ve got this one which is running on Neto now this is you know you can see here the high it’s been 5.8 and you know if they have to mistake we need this faster can we please get up faster so we’ve got it faster but it ain’t great it’s still two and a half seconds right so that’s really slow and that’s even after they’ve worked on and you can see here what happens as you get down to one and a half seconds and Googlebot comes in and goes ah well since you go in this fast I can come in and have a look at more stuff anyway so that’s some of the issues that we face with Neto is speed bigcommerce you can see there it’s great for spinning Shopify as well as a Shopify one you can see the spike here but you know even when it’s spiking it’s only spiking to 300 milliseconds so it’s still really fast still nice and quick so Magento is probably the one we would always go you’re on Magento that’s great that’s fine the problems that you run into the with Magento me around problems with all the e-commerce systems is the theme it might be using I mean we’ve had some Magento systems where they’ve got four million 404s that Google has found in the index so no platform is immuned problems depending on how it’s been programmed and set up but certainly with Magento it’s probably the most flexible platform that we can do it for SEO it is however cracking the walnut with a sledgehammer sometimes so you may not need that if you’ve got a small catalogue you might want to consider looking at something like word for word Pro word press and WooCommerce those two together we’ve ranked quite successfully quite a lot of sites with that combination when the catalog has started to get a bit cumbersome though it doesn’t work as well and you start to have some issues so the most robust is Magento and then in your hosted systems we’d probably lean towards you know shopify bigcommerce if you want to go down that path on one less sort of a softer entry into the e-commerce space but if you’re looking for something a bit more robust a bit more enterprise level then certainly we would always recommend going Magento hopefully that’s helpful there’ll be a bigger blog post down the track to follow this we’ll do some matrixes of of what we like because let’s face it for instance you know a lot of businesses you know SEO was only one consideration when they’re selecting a CMS and there are trade-offs so for instance you know you might wants your ecommerce CMS to also in to interface with your eBay store well which one of those does that yeah and that’s not an SEO concern so there are a lot of things to take into account when you are choosing an e-commerce CMS but for us hopefully that helps you make the decision from an SEO perspective anyway next plague thanks for watching bye
